Home Town of Nobel Laureate Alice Munro

Alice Ann Munro is a short story writer and Nobel Prize winner. She was born in Wingham in 1931.

Alice attended the University of Western Ontario, where she studied English and published her first short story in the university’s literary magazine.

Her first book of short stories was published in 1968, and since then, she has published fifteen more. Her work frequently appears in magazines, including The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, and the Paris Review.

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2013 was awarded to Alice Munro, “master of the contemporary short story.”

Home Town of Earl Heywood

Earl (Carlyle) Heywood was a country singer-songwriter, guitarist, and broadcaster known as ‘Canada’s No. 1 Cowboy Singer.’ He lived and worked in Wingham.

Born on a farm outside Exeter, Ontario, Heywood learned guitar at age 10. He began his career playing tenor euphonium with the Exeter Brass Band. He served in the army during World War II and, in 1941, became well known for singing his own ‘Living in the Army’ as the theme of a radio show on CFCO, Chatham, Ontario.

In 1942, he joined CKNX Radio in Wingham, Ontario and remained at that station as a singer and announcer for more than 40 years, performing for almost 20 years on the weekly CKNX Barn Dance.

Barn Dance Radio Show

CKNX Barn Dance, ‘Canada’s Largest Travelling Barn Dance,’ was a radio show heard Saturday nights from 1937-63 on CKNX in Wingham.

Barn Dance Museum was based in North Huron Museum. Unfortunately, now it’s closed.

Wingham Trail

Filled with an eerie, peaceful, and nature-filled atmosphere, this next stop will make sure you disconnect from the outside world! The serene 2.5 km long Wingham Trail runs along an old abandoned rail bed, intercrossing the sparkling maitland river, surrounded by rustic feel wooden bridges and bright green forestry.

This trail is a great way to connect with nature and spend your day hiking, cycling, or exploring the enchanting landscape with your friends and family.  The amenities the trail offers are free parking, picnic areas, rest areas and complete wheelchair access.
