Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair

Recommended by Zoey Kurylo

Smoky Lake is known as the pumpkin capital of Alberta. It’s no wonder the town hosts an annual Pumpkin Fair every year.

At the fair, you’ll be able to participate in various fair activities, including a perogy eating contest, a corn maze, a pumpkin drop, and much more. And make sure you stay to see who wins the pumpkin weigh-off, where people travel hundreds of kilometres to compete to see who has the largest pumpkin.

And for food and drinks, there are many options to choose from. To start, you have the classic fair food trucks serving mini donuts, kettle corn, cotton candy, and other suitable staples. Then there are also the beer gardens, where you can sit down, enjoy a drink, and watch the fair festivities around you. And in the evening, make sure you head to Métis Crossing for a final harvest dinner.

With everything going on at the Pumpkin Fair, you’re sure to be in for a full day of fun and excitement that the whole family can enjoy.

Or, if you’re feeling more outdoorsy, Métis Crossing also features a campground available for use. And with being so far out of town, you’ll be able to see spectacular views of the Milky Way in the night sky.

So, make sure you stop by to learn more about the history of the Métis people while taking in the incredible countryside scenery.

CN Museum

Located in the town’s original train station, the CN Museum is a place to learn more about what life was like in the early 1900s for the residents of Smoky Lake. There you’ll be able to find items that were originally used in the station and general items from around the town. Pictures throughout the town’s history can also be viewed.

Outside the building, you’ll find an old train caboose you can go in and explore, as well as a performing arts stage. On top of that, the museum doubles as a tourist information centre, which makes it the perfect place to come and learn and ask any questions you may have about the town while learning about its history.
