Kinmount Train Station

The most enduring symbol of Kinmount’s railway history is the railway station. It stands in the core of the village, like an umbrella pole with the rest of the village under its awning. The Railway Station was originally built in 1876 by Sir William Mackenzie from Kirkfield.

Over time, business on the railway (after 1923, a branch of CN) declined. Freight dwindled & passenger traffic stopped completely. The station became a storage depot. Eventually, in 1978, the station closed.

Today, the Kinmount Railway Station and the whole corridor serve as a meeting place for the community. It is the centre of the village, the same as it was in the 1800s.

Don’t miss this unique museum.

Icelandic Settlement Disaster Memorial

Kinmount is notable for being one of the first sites of Icelandic settlement in Canada.

“In the 1870s, economic distress prompted mass emigration from Iceland. On September 25th, 1874, 352 Icelanders, exhausted and weakened by illness arrived at the emigration sheds in Toronto. When the Victoria Railway Company offered work constructing its line from near Kinmount, the provincial government housed the Icelanders in log shanties downriver from here. Poor ventilation, sanitation and diet allowed sickness to rage through their cold, over-crowded quarters. Within six weeks, twelve children and a teenager had died. By the spring of 1875, the death toll had doubled and many of the settlers scattered in search of a better life. In the fall, most regrouped in Toronto and travelled west to found the settlement of Gimli, Manitoba.”

Ontario Provincial Plague

Additional plaques include this text in Icelandic and French.

A memorial paying tribute to these early settlers was erected there in 2000.

Austin Sawmill Heritage Park

The Austin Sawmill Heritage Park is a gem along the Burnt River to explore Kinmount’s heritage and experience its charm. The Austin Sawmill was once a fixture of the area’s booming lumber industry. The first mill was built on the site in the 1890s and owned by William T. Craig and John Austin.

Come for a visit to investigate the sawmill restoration project and have a picnic, go fishing, kayaking, canoeing, walking along the trail or just being. There are plenty of picnic tables and benches to be had.

Victoria Rail Trail

The Victoria Railway connected Kinmount with Lindsay and Haliburton. The line was absorbed by Canadian National Railways as the Haliburton subdivision. Passenger service ceased in 1960, freight service ended in 1978, and the line was abandoned in 1981.

It was converted to the 55-km Victoria Rail Trail used year-round for hiking, horseback riding, cycling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

Find the sign to the trail near the train station and heritage park.

Highland Cinemas

Highland Cinemas is a one-of-a-kind movie theatre. Hidden in a bit of bush, on the hill just outside the village limits, it looks like an average two-storey house. Only when you step through the double-glass doors — where the garage should be — do you realize you’ve entered a celluloid oasis.

Don’t miss historical artifacts in a museum.
