Stuart (Stu) Laird was born in Assiniboia in 1960. He grew up to become a well-known football player who played college football in Calgary, Alberta before moving up to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Stu played on the Calgary Stampedes team in the CFL for twelve years as a defensive tackle and recorded 72 quarterback sacks in his career! He won the Tom Pate Memorial Award in 1991 and the CFL West All-Star award in 1994!
