Shurniak Art Gallery

The Shurniak Art Gallery holds the private collection of Bill Shurniak (founder of the gallery). The collection includes original paintings, artifacts, and sculptures from places all around the world. The gallery showcases pieces from international places such as Hong Kong and Australia, as well as Canadian and local pieces.

As well as a large collection of art, the building itself is unique in its design and consists of seven gallery rooms that names are former and existing villages in the rural municipality of Stonehenge.

Fresh Start

This health-food restaurant is uniquely located inside the Shurniak Art Gallery. The food is popularly ordered as take-out by people in the town. You can dine-in at the restaurant as while as taking it out to enjoy while sightseeing around the town!

Dining in at the restaurant you are able to enjoy the peaceful environment of the gallery while you eat!

Assiniboia and District Museum

The Assiniboia and District Museum displays the heritage of Western Canada. In the museum, there is a boardwalk that will take you back in time to 1912 to the prairie town.

As well as the history of the town, the museum has a vintage gallery in which you can see several antique cars (as old as 1916), shops, a military exhibit, and an outdoor display.

Prince of Wales Centre | Olympia Movie Theatre

The Prince of Wales Cultural and Recreation Centre is Assiniboia’s hub for entertainment. The centre includes a community auditorium, library, theatre, curling club, and other businesses! The Olympia Movie Theatre is a key place to visit for those interested in movies! Throughout the year there are many different events held in the community centre! Depending on what time of the year you are visiting there may be an event you want to go to that would be held in this centre.

Willows Reservoir

Willows Reservoir, also known as Willows dam, is a popular place for people who like to fish or enjoy the water. The dam has a boat launch available and it is known to be a place for people in Assiniboia to go canoeing!

Summer is not the only season that the dam is a popular place to be! When winter comes around the popular activity at the dam is ice fishing.

Home Town of Clint Smith

Clint Smith was the last surviving player from the Rangers’ 1940 Stanley Cup champions, till 2009. He died when he was 95.

Clint Smith was born in Assiniboia in 1913. He is well known for his time spent playing in the National Hockey League (NHL). Clint played for the New York Rangers and the Chicago Black Hawks during the ten years that he played in the NHL.

Throughout his professional hockey career, he won numerous awards for his skills and talent. He won the Lady Byng Trophy in both 1939 and 1944. He was also playing on the New York Rangers when they won the Stanley Cup in 1940!

In 1991 Clint was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Self-Guided Driving Tours

Assiniboia Saskatchewan is considered the heart of the golden south. One of the best places to see while visiting is the town and its surrounding area. The prairies are a beautiful sight to see, and the town knows that!

There are five different self-guided tours that are available to go on! They include active vacation, outdoor adventure, parks and recreation, prairie culture, and history and culture! The five different options all tour throughout the town and the area around it while providing different suggestions of activities and places to stop at on the way!

Assiniboia Regional Park

The Assiniboia Regional Park is made up of three different locations. The golf course, the Willows Dam and the Centennial Park.

The regional park itself consists of playgrounds, a campground, beach volleyball, tennis courts, a swimming, a splash park, and other amenities.

The regional park offers a place to relax and sightsee as well as enjoy different activities while in Assiniboia.

Home Town of Stu Laird

Stuart (Stu) Laird was born in Assiniboia in 1960. He grew up to become a well-known football player who played college football in Calgary, Alberta before moving up to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Stu played on the Calgary Stampedes team in the CFL for twelve years as a defensive tackle and recorded 72 quarterback sacks in his career! He won the Tom Pate Memorial Award in 1991 and the CFL West All-Star award in 1994!
