French River Provincial Park Visitor Centre

A recipient of the Governor-General’s Architectural Award for public buildings in 2010, the French River Visitor Centre is located at the junction of the French River and Highway 69.

The Visitor Centre’s exhibits showcase the rich history of First Nations, French and English cultures that have lived, worked and travelled these waters over the centuries, as well as the river’s plants, wildlife and unique landscapes.

A small fee to see the museum and a very nice gift shop where visitors can purchase souvenirs and keepsakes for themselves and others.

It may be possible to miss the highway sign, but the entrance is just south of the French River Bridge.

French River Provincial Park

The French River is one of Ontario’s most beautiful waterway provincial parks. It is steeped in history, abounding nature, and some of the most beautiful shoreline cliffs imaginable.

One of the most famous Canadian artists Tom Thomson wrote his Spring, French River in 1914. You can view the painting at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

The cliffs in many areas look like they have been melted, or pushed by a giant hand in order to make them stack sideways. The waters are great to swim in, and the campsites clean.

People are friendly and helpful and canoe rentals and maps easy to come by at the French River Supply Post.

This Provincial Park is a gem and has lots to see. It does have signs for Massasauga Rattlesnakes so visitors should walk carefully and be aware of their surroundings.

There is a Snowmobile Bridge that can be seen from the highway.

There is also a beautiful waterfall that provides breathtaking views and is the perfect place to relax at.

Sunset on Pickerel River

The Pickerel River is a beautiful site while crossing over on Hwy 69. It provides an excellent view of the sunrise from the Ronald J. MacGillivray Memorial bridge if you can catch it.
