In 1994, during a jazz show at the Jardins de la République (now called de la République provincial park), the artists on stage asked the crowd if they would like to see a Jazz and Blues festival in the Madawaska region.

The first edition of the Edmundston Jazz and Blues Festival was held in 1995.
