The museum opened in 1967 as a place to celebrate local history in Northern Ontario. It has fascinating antiques, but the biggest attraction is the 275-ton Iron Horse steam engine outside.

Home Town of Floyd Curry

Floyd “Busher” Curry won four Stanley Cups with Montreal Canadiens.

Curry was born in Chapleau in 1925. Shortly after his release from the Canadian military in the fall of 1945, Floyd Curry became a professional hockey player as a member of the Quebec Royals of the Quebec Senior Hockey League (in 1946, renamed the Montreal Royals).

On October 29, 1951, Curry recorded his only career hat trick. He scored three goals in a 6-1 Habs victory over the New York Rangers in front of the Princess. It was a night when Princess Elizabeth, soon to become Queen Elizabeth II, and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, was in attendance at the Montreal Forum. The Princess left the Forum under the impression that Busher Curry was the best hockey player in the world.

It was Curry’s greatest moment.

Potholes Provincial Nature Reserve

Potholes Provincial Nature Reserve is a unique geological site on the Kinniwabi River east of Wawa on Hwy 101. A short interpretive trail takes you through a garden-like setting in the Boreal Forest. Distinctive “potholes” in the bedrock were naturally formed by glacial meltwaters 10,000 years ago, and water still flows through these potholes.

Stay for a picnic and soak up the scenery, then follow a short interpretive trail that leads to the potholes, sedges and flowering plants growing along the riverbank.

Algoma Headwaters Provincial Park

This vast backcountry landscape contains various natural and recreational features, and its forests are renowned for their crimson fall colours and majestic old-growth white pine. It is also an area of cultural significance, having been inhabited by Indigenous people for thousands of years. It is a natural environment park, owing to its character as a generally undeveloped backcountry landscape.
