Klondike Gold Rush

Gold was discovered there by local miners in 1896. When news reached Seattle and San Francisco, 100,000 prospectors migrated to the Klondike. Some became wealthy, but the majority went in vain.

Dawson City was established in 1896 as a result of the Klondike Gold Rush. That left a body of literature that has popularized and romanticized the Yukon.

Now Dawson Historical Complex is a National Historic Site of Canada. The complex comprises the core of Dawson City. Most buildings reflect pioneer, boom-town architecture in their small scale, simple massing and wood construction.

Claim 33 Goldpanning

Helping visitors to find Klondike Gold in the heart of the Klondike Gold fields is our summer fun!

Claim 33 Goldpanning is a Klondyke Mining Museum that is family-owned and operated. Visitors are instructed on panning techniques and are then able to pan for gold. Claim 33 guarantees that everyone will be able to find gold.

The museum part of the business has vintage mining equipment and antique vehicles. Claim 33 Goldpanning also has a gift shop with unique souvenirs along with food and drink. Claim 33 Goldpanning has a large selection of northern books in numerous languages, as well as recently acquired Gold rush era reprints.

Jack London Museum

Tucked in a quiet corner of Dawson City, this quaint museum is dedicated entirely to the life of White Fang author, one of the best-known American writers Jack London. The City of Dawson and the nearby ghost town of Forty Mile are featured prominently in the novels and short stories of London, including The Call of the Wild.

The museum has historical archives and documents that give visitors the opportunity to learn about London’s adventures before, during and after the Klondike Gold Rush. London join the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897.

The museum allows visitors to see how London (and others) resided during the Klondike Gold Rush. The museum is complete with period-appropriate furnishings and objects. This replica is built from half of the logs of London’s original Cabin.

Klondike Spirit River Cruise

May-September

The Klondike Spirit River Cruise allows you to cruise the Yukon River on the only operational paddle wheeler in the Yukon.

The Klondike Spirit has been in operation since 2007 and operates daily from May to September. The cruise gives visitors a history of the gold rush, describes the significance of Moosehide and provides a brief history of Dawson City.

The Klondike Spirit carries up to 50 passengers on board. The tour is approximately an hour and a half of upriver and downriver cruising.

Dredge

Dredge No 4

Dredge No. 4 is commemorated because it represents the importance of dredging operations in the Yukon between 1899 and 1966.

Dredges were brought to the Yukon in 1899 as a very efficient means of mining for Klondike gold. Corporate mining played a major role in the viability of the community of Dawson City and the Yukon Territory and exploded during the Klondike Gold Rush.

Dredge No. 4 offers guided tours through the interior of this massive machine with a Parks Canada staff member. The tour allows visitors to discover the evolution of placer mining from early pioneers doing it by hand, to large-scale corporate gold-digging machines that forever altered the landscape.

Hilarious Historical Pub Tour

The Hilarious Historical Pub Tour is hosted by long-time Yukoner Suitcase Sue. This 2-hour walking tour of Dawson City explores the oldest water holes while giving visitors a rundown on Klondike’s colourful history of bootlegging, brothels, and “back-alley bedlam”.

The tour stops inside each establishment and gives visitors the opportunity to purchase location items.

At a cost of $25 per person, the tour is an excellent way to familiarize oneself with downtown Dawson City while also offering a learning experience. The tour says that Miners welcome, but please, no minors.

Dawson City Museum

The Dawson City Museum is housed in the Old Territorial Administration Building National Historic Site.

The museum’s exhibits provide an in-depth look at Dawson City’s rich social and mining history, the Hän First Nations People, pre-gold rush history, the colourful Gold Rush era, and the natural history of the Klondike. The museum also had three Klondike Mines Railway locomotes housed in the museum’s train shelter. One of these trains is among the oldest preserved examples in Canada.

The museum also boasts temporary exhibits, gallery tours by costumed interpreters, audiovisual programs, rocker box and gold pouring demonstrations, special events, research services, and a gift and coffee shop.

Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre

The Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre offers visitors the opportunity to discover the history and culture of the first people of Klondike.

The cultural centre offers visitors guided tours, a variety of hands-on programs, films, and cultural events.

The cultural centre also has a gift shop that carries the largest selection of hand-made beaded footwear in the Yukon, and a large variety of northern and First Nation-inspired gifts with artists having their unique works available for sale. The gift shop also carries clothing, books, and unique wild-crafted teas.

Dawson City Firefighter Museum

The Dawson City Fire Department has served the Dawson community since the Gold Rush and has been in operation for over 120 years; making it the oldest fire station in the Yukon. The Dawson City Fire Fighter’s Museum is a non-profit organization run by members of Dawson City’s Volunteer Fire Department.

The museum’s mission is to preserve its firefighting heritage by acquiring and restoring memorabilia of the fire department’s past. The fire department has acquired many unique pieces of equipment and vehicles over the years, which are now on display for visitors. These include extensive collections of vintage fire engines, apparatuses, photographs, and artifacts.

Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall

Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall is Canada’s oldest casino. It was established in 1971. The casino offers unique Klondike period styling, cancan entertainment, and a unique charm. Gerties has three different cancan-inspired showed, numerous casino games, and nostalgic music.

Summer visitors may be hosted by Diamond Tooth Gertie herself, distinguished by her strong powerhouse vocals, and cheeky conversation.

Dawson City Golf Course

The Dawson City Golf Course is located across the Yukon River. It is known for its’ wildlife and offers incredible wildlife viewing opportunities from the clubhouse patio.

The course itself is a 9-hole wilderness course that is open from May to September annually.

This northernmost golf course is hidden within the Sunnydale slopes. It offers the perfect escape from the town.

The golf course offers a driving range, golf cart and club rental, licensed facilities, and a clubhouse.

To access the golf course, the George Black Ferry must be taken (operates 24/hrs a day) and it is free from May to September.
