Société d’Histoire & de Généalogie de Matane

09

This local museum was founded in 1949 by Charles-Édouard Vézina, whose mission focused on preserving the regional heritage and educating people to honour the past. Learning more about the history and genealogy of the town is a great way to respect the values of the ancestors that came before us and find culture in our roots. People can take self-guided tours to admire the exhibits that highlight the region’s detailed past. They host permanent and temporary exhibitions, such as the Claude Picher exhibit on his colourful painting canvas of the region between 1990 and 1995.

The Société d’Histoire & de Généalogie de Matane has a vast and extensive library of records, where volunteers can help you track down your family’s ancestral roots. Various objects are on display at the museum, including documents on past marriages and parish records, genealogical photographs, old films and life narratives, and much more. They have a boutique and also occasionally host activities throughout the year. Take a stroll around the Société d’Histoire & de Généalogie de Matane to appreciate the local history that made the town what it is today!
