The Community of Langdon became well known as the “Good Luck Town” around 1908, in part due to the lack of deaths in the area over a 25-year period.
Langdon was also located on the horseshoe shaped railway turnaround, adding to the Good Luck Town status. This horseshoe, however, is not very traditional, as it is upside down in appearance, pouring Good Luck to those who reside within the community.
The Parade of Garage Sales is an annual event at the beginning of May that kicks off the garage sale season and is one of the largest in the region. Some seniors suggest the sale has been taking place in Langdon for forty to fifty years.
Depending on the weather the number of individual sales can range from two hundred to fifty percent of the houses in Langdon.
The Langdon Days is an annual event that typically happens the weekend (Fri-Sun) after the Calgary Stampede ends (July). Parade (we throw candy!), breakfast, beer gardens, ball tournament, kids carnival/shows, food trucks, market, car show, music, fireworks, etc.
This is a community tradition since its inauguration in 1945.
Langdon has been home to the critically acclaimed Main Street shopping area for some time — its style replicates the way Langdon buildings looked back in 1908 — it’s seeing new shopping and services, including its first Tim Hortons, plus a Buy-Low Foods grocery store, the hamlet’s first large grocery.
The grain elevators were one of the crucial details of the Langdon landscape for dozens of years. Langdon used to be on the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline until it was shifted to run through Indus and Carseland on the present-day CP Brooks subdivision. There are no grain elevators here anymore.
We investigated where this place was.
Denise Marie McCann (Langdon, Alberta – The Good Luck Town Facebook group) suggested adding the place of the old elevators to the Langdon map:
“I remember playing by that far elevator as a kid. The other two were already gone, but that last one was still there. I remember the day they tore the last one down.
I know the elevator was across from us on the tracks and down a little way. We’re on McCann Street.“
Holly McKenna clarified the place:
“I also lived on McCann Street. It’s not quite to scale, but this might give you an idea. It was an open field between Twnshp Rd 233B (used to be Railway Ave) and 1 Ave SE for years after the elevators came down.”
When you visit Langdon, I can go to the place to feel the old town’s atmosphere.

“Love it! Brings back some great childhood memories of living near the tracks and seeing the trains come and go. Ultimately the last elevator was torn down and the trains stopped rolling through and no there are houses where the track used to be, so this is a nice walk down memory lane. THANKS!”
Langdon currently has two schools – Sarah Thompson Elementary School for students in kindergarten to Grade 5, and Langdon School, which serves students from kindergarten to Grade 9.
But many Langdon residents have nostalgic memories of the old school building next to the main street behind the bottle storage. You can see it practically from the main street.
Many of Alberta’s early historic school buildings are abandoned and deteriorating now. The Alberta Teachers’ Association Magazine creates a visual archive of these houses.
Langdon is home to Boulder Creek golf course, a 6963 yard, par 72, 18 hole golf course. Located 30 minutes from downtown Calgary, Boulder Creek combines championship golf with a relaxed country atmosphere.
With 30 acres of water at the Boulder Creek Golf Course, the defining design characteristic is water features on 14 of 18 holes.
In Langdon Park on Centre St. | Entrance to the park driveway is at the first baseball diamond; continue south on the driveway to the parking lot. The park is to the east of the parking lot.
Near the skatepark is an ice rink that is filled during the winter months.
