“Almost the Perfect Place to Live”

Recommended by Peter C. Newman.

In 1958, Deep River was the subject of an article in Maclean’s Magazine by famous journalist Peter C. Newman.

In the article “The Deep River: Almost the Perfect Place to Live,” the author describes Deep River:

“The Utopian town where our atomic scientists live and play has no crime, no slums, no unemployment and few mothers-in-law.”

The Canadian Clock Museum

The Canadian Clock Museum is a niche but well-loved museum found in town. The museum features hundreds of clocks with detailed explanations and additional information happily provided by a guide.

The museum also features more than clocks and has many period artifacts, including record players that do not need electricity, cameras, and much more.

Mount Martin Ski Club

The club has been operating for over 60 years with a long history of family fun, alpine racing and social events for the whole community. The club is open to the public, and you are not required to be a member to enjoy the slopes. The ski club offers a variety of mid-week, weekend and holiday skiing.

The club maintains 12 runs serviced by a T-bar, and most trails are groomed. A heated chalet with a snack bar offers users a place to socialize and warm up, whether enjoying the hill during the day or when night skiing.

Oiseau Rock Trail

The Oiseau Rock Trail is a 5 km hiking trail (10 km round trip) through Migizi Kiishkaabikaan (Algonquin) forest.

Discover amazing views from the many lookouts and dip your feet in the Ottawa River on the river trail or take a swim in the lake at the summit. This is a must-see to see panoramic views of the Ottawa River.

The rocky cliff, 150m high, borders the Ottawa River and has a sacred character. Native people believed a man had been turned to stone as he raised his arms to the sky. The rock is covered with red ocher paintings and rock art figures dating back centuries. Today, the Rocher-Ă -l’Oiseau site has a path that leads hikers to the top of the rock. The path is punctuated with interpretive panels on the history and nature found on the site. In addition, the forest is home to four species of rare plants and trees: Virginia Juniper, Narrow-Leaved Tea, Aromatic Sumac, and Douglas-fir.

Plage Lamure Beach

Lamure Beach is a beautiful sandy beach on the Ottawa River that stretches 150 metres.

The Riverbed drop-off is gradual, with no sharp drop-off within the buoy-lined swimming area. The beach is fine sand, good for sand castles. You can find a few clams on the sandy bottom of the river bed.

There is a picnic area with a covered gazebo. Near Deep River Marina, a boat launch is available.

This beach looks out on the Ottawa River and the Laurentians Lowlands on the Québec side and is surrounded by forest with its many trails. Downtown Deep River is a 10 min walk away. Look for bald eagles and berries during the warmer months.

Santa Fe Restaurant

Sante Fe Restaurant is a delicious restaurant best known for its Mexican food.

The restaurant has an excellent atmosphere with that small-town feel. The restaurant serves Mexican meals like quesadillas, taco salad, burritos, enchiladas and much more.

My favourites at the Sante Fe Restaurant are the homemade French fries. The Sante Fe tacos are also delicious, like the Penne Carbonara and the Knife and Fork burger.
