Captain James Cook Historic Site

01

This site hosts a statue of James Cook and his adventures in mapping the world.

James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the British Royal Navy. He was famous for his three voyages between 1768 and 1779 in the Pacific Ocean and New Zealand and Australia.

From 1763 to 1767, Captain James Cook directed a survey embracing the greater part of the coast of Newfoundland. The charting of this coastline was the first scientific, large-scale, hydrographic survey to use precise triangulation to establish land outlines.

The site has excellent views of the bay and its mountains. It also hosts a view of the entire city.
