Mackenzie River

Inuvik sits on the bank of the East Channel of the Mackenzie River and is the main access point for the Mackenzie Delta. Here, the Delta is a labyrinth of channels leading to the Beaufort Sea.

In the summer months, it is popular for fishing, boating, and camping alongside.

In the winter months, it is used for ice fishing, snowmobiling, and ice road travelling.

The Mackenzie River has been a major transportation route playing a vital role in Arctic development.

Muskrat Jamboree

March

Celebrating Spring in the Mackenzie Delta

For as long as we can remember people from across the Mackenzie Delta have gathered to celebrate the change of season after a long winter. In 1957 the first official Muskrat Jamboree was held in what is now the Town of Inuvik.

Set on the backdrop of the frozen East Channel of the Mackenzie River, this 4-day festival celebrates life, friendships, vitality, traditional skills & true authentic Delta culture.

Ivvavik National Park

Ivvavik, meaning ‘a place for giving birth, a nursery,’ in Inuvialuktun, the language of the Inuvialuit, is the first national park in Canada to be created as a result of an aboriginal land claim agreement.

The park protects a portion of the calving grounds of the Porcupine caribou herd and represents the Northern Yukon and Mackenzie Delta natural regions.

The Only Traffic Light North of the Arctic Circle

Recommended by Daniel Case

“I’m pretty sure this is the only traffic light in North America north of the Arctic Circle.

Of course, it’s usually set to flashing red and yellow.”

Igloo Church

Recommended by Mark

In the isolated region of the Northwest Territories, you can still find a glamorous church. Our Lady of Victory Church is often called the Igloo Church. It was built from 1958-1960 and despite its isolated location it still has its own charm in its own manner.

The church has a dome roof and slightly resembles an extremely enlarged igloo. The exterior is all white, while the interior has an altar that follows the walls and is covered in beautiful paintings.
It is a Roman Catholic Parish serving the people of Inuvik and the surrounding region.

Midnight Sun Mosque

Northernmost mosque

The Midnight Sun Mosque, affectionately called the Little Mosque on the Tundra, was built in Winnipeg. In 2010, it was setting off on its 4000 km journey to Inuvik.

Travelling on both road and river, the building made it into town safe and sound.

Inuvik has roughly 3,200 residents, some 80 of whom are Muslim.
