Old Taft Heritage Sites

Taft was a mill and railway town established in the late 1800s. The town was named after the manager of the Heed Lumber Company by the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Heed Lumber Company operated a logging railway in the town at that time. Much of the settlement of Taft, BC, has now faded away, but the old remains can still be explored via heritage trails.

Of the old settlements, remains of the general store, sawmill, hotel, and train station can still be seen. This ghostly walk through history will bring you closer to the railway settlement way of life responsible for developing much of western Canada and the Rockies.

The Last Spike

The Last Spike is a historical landmark on the TransCanada highway between Taft and Craigellachie. This landmark marks where in 1885, the last spike was driven into the ground, signifying the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway. This area is marked with a monument beside the railway line and a gift shop.

It is a great place to stop during your journey and enjoy a picnic in their designated area.

Kay Falls Trail

This is a short and out-and-back trail off of the main highway. This trail is considered pretty easy, typically taking 5 minutes to reach the falls. The falls themselves are beautiful, with small streams cascading over the jagged face of the towering rock. You can get up nice and close to the falls, but it’s recommended that you wear a rain jacket if that’s your plan because you are almost guaranteed to get sprayed.

One of the best parts of Kay Falls is that you are likely guaranteed to be able to enjoy it alone, as this hidden gem is rarely explored by travellers.

Eagle River

The Eagle River was named by Walter Moberly, a civil engineer who played a major role in the development of British Columbia. He was inspired to name the river after following the flight of eagles and discovering the nearby Eagle Pass. The Eagle River is a fundamental part of the local area ecosystem, mainly as the habitat and transport route of numerous different types of fish.

The Eagle River has chinook, sockeye, kokanee, rainbow fish, mountain whitefish, carp, and many others. It’s a great river for fishing or floating down on paddle boards. Between Taft and Sicamous is the Eagle River Nature Park, which has plenty of scenic trails around the river and a nature center with educational programs on the local ecosystem.

George Creek Waterfall

This track is beautiful to visit year-round, popular for hiking, running, snowshoeing, and walking dogs on leashes. This easy loop trail takes approximately 35 minutes and takes you past three different waterfalls along Gorge Creek. As it is more out of the way and less frequently used, you will likely be able to explore the trail in privacy. This also makes it a more active area for wildlife than more popularly trekked trails.

Make sure to travel in groups and make noise to avoid unwanted encounters.
