Upana Caves

A day-use area with a trail system leads to the Upana Caves, which are called for the underground river that runs through the system. There are five caverns to explore and a viewpoint with a waterfall, and an observation platform with a fantastic view of the Resurgence Cave entrance.

Remember to be cautious, bring flashlights, keep an eye on your feet, and keep an eye on the low cave ceilings.

The Upana caverns are located between Gold River and Tahsis on northern Vancouver Island, along the Tree-to-Sea trail. They’re roughly a fifteen-minute drive from Gold River. It’s a gravel road, but it’s not tough to navigate.

From Gold River, head west towards Tahsis. Turn onto the Head Bay Forest Service Road (gravel) for approximately 14.5 km. Turn right onto Branch H-27, and park on the right just before the bridge. The trailhead is on the other side of the bridge.

Strathcona Provincial Park

The oldest provincial park in British Columbia, the Strathcona Provincial Park, was established in 1911.

Strathcona Park, which spans virtually the whole length of Vancouver Island, is a rough alpine wilderness of over 250,000 hectares. The park is dominated by mountain peaks always covered with snow. A landscape with rivers, creeks, and streams is dotted with lakes and alpine tarns.

Strathcona Provincial Park is a unique hidden treasure and the ideal adventure trip location. Della Falls, Canada’s tallest waterfall, with a total plunge of 440 metres across three cascades, is located in the park’s southern part. Several attractive tiny lakes dot the Forbidden Plateau region during the summer, giving excellent fly fishing for rainbow trout.

The primary access to Strathcona Park is via Highway 28, which connects with Gold River on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Follow Hwy 19 north past Courtenay to Campbell River, then follow Hwy 28 west for 48 km.

Strathcona Park Lodge

The resort is situated on Buttle Lake’s picturesque shoreline. They’re a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with breathtaking vistas and easy access to distant terrain.

Depending on the time of year, you may self-cater in one of their cabins or have the chef prepare for you. Enjoy the opportunity to break bread over excellent, handmade, locally produced meals keeping their principles and culinary philosophy while their locations are open. Paddle along the beaches of Buttle Lake in the evenings or explore the trails surrounding the lodge!

The lodge is the ideal place to reconnect because there is no TV or Wifi in the rooms.

The Great Walk

Every year in June, The Great Walk takes place between Gold River and Tahsis. The Tahsis Lions Club hosts this annual fundraising event.

It takes place on a 63.5-kilometre gravel logging road on Vancouver Island, between Gold River and Tahsis. It encompasses some of the world’s most challenging and picturesque terrain.

The Great Walk begins at 4:00 a.m. at Gold River and concludes sixteen hours later at 8:00 p.m. in Tahsis.

Great Walkers have raised over $1,000,000.00 for a variety of worthwhile causes. Some walkers opt to raise funds for a well-known charity or organization, while others simply walk for the challenge.

Gold River Golf & Country Club

Gold River Golf Course is nestled among a lively forest, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Half the enjoyment of playing this course is taking in the spectacular surroundings that one sees both on the system and on the way there.

Of Gold River’s numerous great holes, the 1st must be regarded as its best. This 380-yard par four doglegs left and followed the river’s twists and turns, providing a gorgeous background and a dangerous hazard.

The Men’s Amateur, held in mid-July, the Peak Senior Years Tournament in August, and the Ladies’ Jewel of the Isle in September are just a few notable events and tournaments Gold River offers each year.
