Festival Folifrets Baie-James

February – March

The Festival Folifrets Baie-James has been snowmobile competitions and “winter carnival” type festivities for more than 50 years. It was in 1967 that a member of the Chibougamau Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Léopold Larouche, proposed to organize a snowmobile competition in Chibougamau.

Since then, every year, the city of Chibougamau shines, for about ten days, through its unique winter festival, where the sport of snowmobiling is in the spotlight.

Réserve faunique Assinica

Whether you are a fishing fanatic or whether it is a short family outing, four species of fish await your line in the wildlife reserve – walleye, lake trout, brook trout and northern pike.

The word “Assinica” comes from the Cree word asinikaw, meaning “it’s stony” or “it’s rocky.” It is the name of a lake in the Broadback River basin that runs through the reserve.

You will find the largest natural freshwater lake in Québec, lac Mistassini, with a staggering length of 176 km. Let yourself be tempted by the ocean air and enjoy a memorable stay in this wildlife sanctuary where the word space takes its whole dimension.

Parc régional Obalski

Regional Park Obalski is a magnificent, top-rated park loved among locals.

The trails meander through a forest where you can observe the effects of a forest fire ravaging the Park in 2005. The Kiwanis trail goes around the Gilman lakes. You can shorten the hike by shortcut via the Hydro trail, which partly runs along each lake. The Rustic trail is accessed via the Kiwanis trail; the intersection is at the western end of Little Gilman Lake.

The summit of Mount Helios, named in honour of the Greek god of the sun, is where visitors can view the town of Chibougamau and the lake of the same name, as well as Lac aux Dorés.

The Lac Sauvage trail passes by the lake of the same name and ends at Campbell Road. Another trail leads to the top of Mount Chalco.

Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute

Located 40 minutes from Chibougamau, this cultural institute serves as a museum, archive, library, teaching centre, cultural centre, and a virtual hub designed for high-powered interactivity.

The building is beautifully designed and is tucked in the beautiful community of Oujé-Bougoumou, right beside a lake. Aanischaaukamikw’s bold design, and its massive laminated spruce beams, come from the essential structure of the traditional Cree sabtuan.

A remarkable experience for the visitor to the north, deep with cultural artifacts, interpretative stories about ancestral lands and the history of the Crees of Eeyouu Istchee.

A must-see for visitors wanting to learn more about Indigenous culture, heritage and tradition in a beautiful and interactive setting.

Sentier Stolen-Bedard

The Sentier Stolen-Bedard is a beautiful 5.63 km trail on the outskirts of town.

Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 hours to complete. This trail is excellent for hiking, snowshoeing, and walking, and you’ll unlikely encounter many other people while exploring.

The trail is well-marked but has some very wet sections. Bridges are slightly deteriorated but still safe to cross.

It is highly recommended to bring suitable footwear, to go as a group, and to exercise caution as the trail can be challenging at times.
