Home of Captain Robert A. Bartlett

Brigus is the hometown of one of the greatest Arctic explorers, Captain Bartlett. His home was the Hawthorne cottage, and the tunnel was built for him and his fishing work.

He was born and raised in Brigus, and despite his mother wanting him to be a minister, his love was always the sea. He was a pioneer in exploring the arctic, but he always returned home to Brigus.

You can visit a monument for Captain Bartlett Memorial on Church Hill.

Don’t forget to visit also Hawthorne Cottage and Brigus Tunnel.

Hawthorne Cottage National Historic Site

Homestead of Captain Bartlett, this cottage is now a historical site full of rare artifacts from his expeditions.

It also has furnishings from the 1800s when his family was actively living in the home and Bartlett was out fishing and exploring. Take a tour and learn some significant history tied to Brigus, and do not forget to take in the beauty of their gardens!

Brigus Tunnel

Again, like everything else in Brigus, the tunnel comes with an impressive history. This tunnel was created for Captain Bartlett so he could continue with his fishing and offloading. Tunnel construction began in 1860 and was actively used until 1910; now, it is a piece of history for anyone who wants to visit!

Spectacle Head Trail

Just a short drive from Brigus is Spectacle Head. A moderate trail following the cliff will take you up to the American Man, a stone cairn. If you are not up for a walk, just stay at Spectacle head, where you can still get some fantastic photos and views of the water, cliffs, and of course, spectacle head.

Ye Olde Stone Barn Museum

History, culture, and a scenic backdrop for photos, this museum offers it all. This barn was rebuilt to its original beauty with stones from the original building. It has since been turned into a museum that houses artifacts, photos, and the history of Brigus dating back to at least 1825, when the barn was originally constructed.
