Capital of Inuit Art

Kinngait (formerly known as Cape Dorset) is world-famous for its great artworks. Since the 1950s, Kinngait has been a centre for drawing, printmaking, and carving. The community calls itself the “Capital of Inuit Art.”

The first Cape Dorset Print Collection was released at the end of the 1950s. Each year, Kinngait Studios issues an annual print collection.

Kenojuak Cultural Centre and Print Shop

The cultural center is named after Kenojuak Ashevak, a renowned Inuit artist born in the community and known for her distinctive graphic art and printmaking. The cultural center features several exhibits and displays on Inuit culture and art, with a particular focus on printmaking.

Visitors can learn about the history and techniques of Inuit printmaking and view a variety of prints by Inuit artists. The center also has a gift shop where visitors can purchase Inuit art and other items.

Mallikjuaq Territorial Park

The Mallikjuaq Territorial Park is a protected area known for its stunning natural beauty, excellent archaeological sites and stone structures dating back some three millennia.

Dorset Island and Mallikjuaq Island seem barren yet sustain many forms of life. The park is home to various wildlife, including polar bears, arctic foxes, and seals. It is also home to various bird species, such as the snowy owl, gyrfalcon, and peregrine falcon. The park is also home to a number of indigenous plants, including mosses, lichens, and arctic willows.

West Baffin Eskimo Co-Operative

Established in 1959, West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative has enjoyed an international reputation for the exquisite prints, drawings and carvings created by its Inuit artist members. The cooperative works with many talented Inuit artists; its art is exhibited and sold locally and internationally.
