The Walleye Capital of Canada

Located on the north shore of Lake Erie, Colchester Harbour is a busy fishing and boating location. In 2007 Colchester was dubbed the Walleye Capital of Canada.

Cast off from Colchester Harbour for a day of fantastic fishing. The fish are always biting at the “Walleye Capital of Canada,” so grab your license and your gear and head out to some of the best fishing grounds on Lake Erie. Yellow perch and pickerel (walleye) are the big catches, but you might also snag some small-mouth bass near the old Colchester Reef Lighthouse.

Colchester Schoolhouse

It was built in 1881, and this was the first ever schoolhouse in the area built under the Public Schools Act. The Colchester Schoolhouse strives to spread awareness about the historical past of the Colchester Centre and to preserve the information significant to the history of Colchester for later generations to come.

The Colchester Schoolhouse is a nice place to visit because you can learn about Colchester’s history and examine the old architecture of the building.

Christ Church Colchester

The chapel was rebuilt in 1957-58 using the original stone of the First Church, built by 1819.

At that time, the members of the church were part of the Essex militia. The founder, Rev. Richard Pollard, was a prominent member of Amherstburg and Fort Malden, as well as ministered to “300 souls in Colchester”.

Home Town of Railroad Engineer Elijah McCoy

Elijah J. McCoy was an inventor and engineer whose 57 patents and the invention of the locomotive lubrication cup led to the slogan “The real McCoy”, denoting quality.

He was born in Colchester in 1844. He was born free. The area was a destination for slaves escaping the U.S. via the Underground Railroad in the mid-19th century.

At the age of fifteen, he left Canada for Edinburgh, Scotland, where he apprenticed for five years as a mechanical engineer.
