In the 19th century, the area was the northern terminus of the Underground Railroad. By the 1850s, the city of Chatham was called the “black mecca of Canada.”

Step inside the museum and uncover the emotional journey of Chatham’s Black community from the end of the 18th century to the present day. Through exhibits, artifacts and an extensive collection of reading materials, the past lives of prominent figures are kept alive.
