picture of Frederick Banting

From Alliston, London, Ontario

Sir Frederick Grant Banting is a Nobel Laureate noted as co-discoverer of insulin and its therapeutic potential.

In 1920 Frederick Banting wrote down an idea for research aimed at isolating an internal secretion of the pancreas that might prove to be a cure for diabetes.

In 1921, Banting began work in University of Toronto under the direction of Professor J.J.R. Macleod and assisted by C.H. Best.

The Toronto experiments culminated in the winter of 1921–22 in the discovery of insulin.

As a keen painter, Banting once took part in a painting expedition above the Arctic Circle.

When the Second World War broke out, he served as a liaison officer between the British and North American medical services. In February 1941 he was killed in an air disaster in Newfoundland.

Alliston is a settlement in Simcoe County in Ontario. It has been part of the Town of New Tecumseth since the 1991 amalgamation of Alliston and nearby villages of Beeton, Tottenham, and the Township of Tecumseth.
